Classes of Travel in Indian Trains

When it comes to comfort while traveling, you have to be very choosy in selecting the seats available in a class of coaches of a train. There are different classes of coaches that are offered by Indian Railways starting in order of monetary terms from lowest to highest class of coaches. These are as follows:

1) General (unreserved coaches) - UR/GEN

General class is the cheapest one. If taken ticket for a particular route, then passengers can board in any of the train going from that specific route in General class only. This class is mostly overcrowded and getting seats in this class can be a tough job.

2) Second Sitting (Non-AC chair car) - 2S

Second Sitting is cheapest reserved class. It is Non-AC coach with Cushion mainly suitable for short distance day journey. In this class, there are 108 seats per coach available.

3) Sleeper Class - SL

These are regular sleeping coach with 3 berths stacked above each other one side. It carries 72-78 berths per coach.

4) Three Tier Air Conditioned Class- 3AC

This class is introduced specially for Garib Rath. It is same as sleeping class but with Air Conditioner. Bedding is charged extra in this class.

5) Two Tier Air Conditioned Class - 2AC

This class is also same as 3rd AC and the only difference is that there is no middle berth. So one compartment carries only 6 people. Here bedding is provided for free.

6) First Class Air Conditioned - 1AC

It is the most expensive class in mail/express train. There are no side berths available and each compartment is an enclosed cabin with a door. So, this class provides more personal space to the passengers.

So, it’s very important for you to know the class in which you would like to book your seats for your journey.

In this way, if you want to search for class availability in a particular train then here you can go to seat availability tab there, select proper source and destination station, date of journey, select the quota you want to go for (as we explained previously) and then select the require class you want to book tickets for. As you fill all the details; list of trains will be shown to you, from that you can select the train you want to reserve tickets for after checking its availability.
