Based on location, seats are broadly divided into two categories viz;
o Main quota
80% seats are reserve for main quota i.e source station traveler.
o Remote location quota
Other 20% is reserve for remote location. Remote locations are nothing but important halts on the train route.
Some trains have no Remote location quota while in some trains there are more than two remote location quota. This you have to check for each train, as there is separate system of dividing quota for each one of it.
Now they are further divided into different types of quotas among them most commonly known quotas are as follows. You asked to select to select quota code while booking tickets.
o General (GN)
This is for common people. During peak season booking ticket under this quota becomes quite difficult. So you can select other quota if there is lack of availability or it is advisable to do prior booking.
o Ladies (LD)
Meant only for ladies only.
o Physically handicapped (HP)
Meant for physically challenged person. Carrying proper documentation is advisable while traveling.
o Tatkal (CK)
Last minute booking can be carried out by this quota. Seats under this quota is only available 1 day before journey.
o Senior Citizen / female above 45 yrs (SS)
This quota is for senior citizens, female above 45 years and for female traveling alone.
o Foreign tourist (FT)
To promote tourism this quota is for foreign tourist.
o Others
Apart from this there are other quotas available like defense (DF), parliament house (PH), duty pass (DP), yuva (YU), lower berth (LB), high officials (HO) etc.
